ROUGH WEEKEND!

sweet laurette'sSo our trip to Port Townsend, WA was awesome! However it would have been way better if I was eating and drinking. It was really great to get out of Seattle for a little bit and just relax with my wife, but man my cravings were out of control. I wanted to cheat so bad, but I realized that I would be cheating myself. It didn’t make it any better when I weighed myself when we got home and I was at 207. I realize that a lot of my weight loss so far has been water weight, which fluxiates, but after behaving myself all weekend it was such a bummer to have gained 5 lbs. water or not.

I felt like a junkie. The hotel we stayed in had a tv and we watched shawshank redemption because if that movie is on it’s near impossible for me to not watch it. Anyways, there were commercials for TGI Friday’s, Outback Steakhouse and Dairy Queen. I can’t even remember the last time I was in any of those establishments, but man did my mouth water when I saw the image of chicken strips, blooming onions, and sub-par burgers. When we got home, Dana had to go to work, and I was all by my lonesome. I went to the grocery store and begrudgingly bought more produce to juice. lunch

I mention corn dogs in the name of my blog, but I don’t necessarily eat them all the time. Hardly ever really, but they use to be a staple in my “eat whatever is front of you” diet. I was so delusional last night that I was going to drive to Ballard market just to get one of their juicy, freshly fried corn dogs….

However, by the grace of God, I was able to stand strong. I looked up more stuff about juice fasting, and found this helpful. It was from doctoryourself.com he talks about a 21 day cycle fast. The first 8 days are only juice and he explained that for the first 2 days, your body is processing the foods you at the day before you started fasting. The the next 3-4 days your body is processing the food stored in your liver, so your really only start actual fasting 5-6 days in, which partially explains why I was losing my mind this weekend. Also Joe Cross talks about using food as a drug, and how people become addicted to the “high” that processed foods give you, before you crash, So having this new knowledge helped a lot, but I was still hungry and feeling lame, so I went to bed.

I woke up this morning feeling good, well rested, and weighed in at 202 again, so that was sigh of relief. I’m getting some pushback from the kitchen manager at work. He worked at detox center in Israel. He said he’s seen bad stuff from just juicing for extended periods of time. He’s a pretty knowledgable guy and I trust his opinion.  So I did some more research and found some negative symptoms that I wasn’t aware of before like feeling cold all the time, metabolism slows (which I really don’t need, my metabolism is pretty slow as it is.) also if you eat too much of vegetables with betacarotine in them you skin can turn orange temporarily, which i have actually already experienced once in my life (as a baby, I was jaundice at birth and then once on baby food apparently I loved yams and carrots, I’ve been all types of colors!)  So all in all, I’m not really to worried, but since I didn’t consult a doctor before doing this thing (which is recommended btw) If anything weird comes up, then I’m going to stop the fast, not with a hamburger, but with smoothies.  We’ll see.  The whole purpose behind doing a 60 day jucie fast for me isn’t just to lose weight, but it’s to reset my body and to spend some significant time to plan how I can make healthy choices in my diet, and my life in general.  So however long I make it (hopefully 60 days), I hope and pray that would be the outcome.  

If you do have any knowledge on any of the negative side effects from juicing, please let me know, I am doing some research on my own, but the more the merrier.  I’m going to go try and clean up our basement storage unit, and hopefully it will keep my mind off greasy fried deliciousness.

    Interesting you want to know the negative sides of juicing, to be honest I am not aware of any. It is so good, it nourishes you, heals you and you loose weight very fast. Coupled with exercise its a winning combo, and belive me after a few weeks of juicing the fat looses its charm!!

  2. So I think I am going to do a juice fast, but I am only going to drink apple and orange juice… maybe some cran-apple if I start feeling crazy. Good job man. Hang in there.

    1. Sweet! Make sure and get fresh stuff. If y’all can swing it, buy a juicer. Most store bought juice is pasteurized, which cooks out a lot of the nutrients. You could also try healthy smoothies. Let me know how it goes.

    2. Remember fruit juice will spike your blood sugar because it is high in sugar. So, your blood sugar will dramatically spike then when it comes down, you’re even hungrier. That’s why a lot of people recommend doing one piece of fruit to ever 2 or 3 veggie’s, and those juices will make you fuller longer.

  3. hi sam. i have something i would like to share with you that does not relate to the juicing, but AFTER the juicing, when you go back to eating… hope you don’t mind! –after i had my kid, i could not lose the baby weight for the life of me. after a year, i was bummin’, and my midwife said “hey, let’s do something about this”. she asked if i was still eating for two, and how much i ate. i said i didn’t think i was eating any different than i normally did. she gave me an assignment, which sounded easy and kinda silly- but which actually upset my whole methodology to eating since childhood: radically: it was ” listen to your body. do not eat at breakfast because it is breakfast time. feed yourself when you are hungry and pay attention. stop eating when you are full”. then she said to throw away what was left on my plate. turns out that was the hardest part. turns out i had been eating everything off of my plate, and anyone’s else because i did not want it to go to waste. i also served myself a portion as big as my husbands, i was big on equality, haha! it was a cycle i had to break since childhood- when i was not allowed to leave the table until my plate was clean. (not to blame them, my mom was aghast and had no memory of this: well-meaning and loving parents can still set you up with bad habits.) anyways, the throwing away of the food was temporary, a learning curve: she wanted me to learn what my portion was and how to serve myself, and if i put the leftovers in the fridge for later, i would be tempted to eat it just so it would be not wasted. so anyways: that was life-changing for me. i discovered it got full about a third of the way into my plate of food. also, that a whole plate of food was not so good for me. i also have done a lot of research on eating, body types, blood types, etc, and would be happy to share whatever i have learned with you in person, i even have some books you could borrow if you are interested. i have found that i am most happiest as a “grazer” and do not eat 3 big meals a day. in fact, i cannot: a big meal sends me into a coma. i eat a little bit, many times a day. i told myself i would never force my kid to finish all his food. (and then of course i get stuck with a bird who nibbled and found ourselves having to force him to sit and just eat ANY food/ it seems in parenting you can’t escape messing up your kid in some way.) but i do approach eating in a whole new light. anyways, i am rooting for you and proud you are taking steps to be healthier and happier with yourself. it is a hard road, but so rewarding in the end! you can do it!!
