Day 15 Going Strong!!!

Sorry for the late update, lots of stuff going on. So I’ll start off by saying that I weighed 194 this morning which means I’m almost halfway to my goal weight! I know the next 30 lbs. will more than likely be harder than the first 20 were, but I’m ready for it. Image

I also have some news as far as my fast overall goes.. Dana found an AMAZING Groupon for a trip to Paris and Rome, we leave for a couple weeks in Europe on May 22nd. This means that I’ll cutting the fast short. I’m going to slowly move back to solids on May 10th, which makes a 40 day fast, which is a nice, round, biblical number. I wanted to give myself sufficient time to get back to whole foods so that we can really enjoy all the deliciousness that these 2 great cities have to offer.

This has gotten me looking up some stuff about what the best strategy is as far as getting back onto solids. I’m thinking about doing smoothies for the first few days so my body can readjust to processing fiber, and then easing back into real solids with just vegetables, and maybe some fish. Dana and I’s plan for our diet will be juice for breakfast, salads for lunch, and a well portioned meal with maybe some meat (maybe not) for dinner. We talked about if we add meat, that it’s more of a side dish instead of the main part of the meal. We have a pretty loose criteria right now, and that’s so we can play it by ear and make adjustments. The good news is that in just these 15 days my nutritional knowledge has grown exponentially, and I really have a desire to be healthy. I’ve fought myself over my own laziness all my life, and by doing this juice fast, I’ve been kicking my laziness in the FACE!!

So let’s get into some more nitty gritty stuff:

Here are some of my favorite recipes:

  • a bunch of strawberries
  • 1/3 of a pineapple
  • 1/2 a grapefruit
  • some coconut water

Most of the time I just browse juice recipes, I don’t really follow any of them to a T,

My favorite green juice looks like this- Image

  • 2-3 big Kale leaves
  • 3-4 celery stalks
  • handful of spinach
  • 1 Zucchini
  • a little Parsley
  • a stalk of Broccoli
  • A few stalks of aspargus
  • Lemon
  • Ginger

You could pretty much throw lemon and ginger in any juice and it would be totally fine, and evenmore healthy. Lemons and ginger go together super well, and they are both really healthy for you!

Another logistical thing that I’ve been doing is I make 4 juices at night (3 for me, 1 for Dana) and I put them in the mason jars (seen above) and they keep really well for the next day. I am thinking about switching to getting up a bit earlier and juicing in the morning (the fresher the better i hear), but we’ll see.

ImageI am crazy about my wife by the way; She’s the best! She took us to Choco Canyon in the U-district here in Seattle the other day. I had never been (or ever heard of it), but I will definitely be back soon. I could go on and on about this place, but I’ll just tell you what we had. She had this delicious looking quinoa dish with peanut sauce and cabbage and spinach. That little shot there is called “Inner Fire” I will probably make one of this every morning! Lemon, Ginger, and Garlic and a dust of cayenne. It was amazing. The other drink was called “Pure Bliss” I can’t remember what all was in it, but it was equally as delicious. There is another location in West Seattle, and if you are ever in the U-District or West Seattle, I would HIGHLY recommend stopping in.

In closing I just want to thank everybody that’s been reading and especially those that have left comments, or have seen me out and about and asked me how it’s going. It means a lot and it would be a lot tougher if I didn’t have people surrounding me that are interested in my crazy step towards living a healthy life. Azurae (sp? sorry) made a GREAT point the other day when she told me that I should avoid counting down the days or thinking about what I’ve giving up, and look at it more as an investment into leading my family well by being healthy.   1. That quinoa dish looks absolutely fabulous. You are correct with not wanting to fast in Europe, THE FOOD IS TOO GOOD. It does come in correct portions, so that is nice. I am currently in day 3 of a 7 day fast. Your fast inspires me though!

  2. Allyson and I have gotten much healthier since being in Murray. Just by eating better, I dropped 10 lbs, which put me right where they say my BMI should be. I feel great about it. Anyway, you’ll love Paris and Rome. Ally and I went to Italy about 3 years ago, and we obsess over getting back. I know some Italian, so if you ever want to chat and learn a little, let me know. Hope you’re good, man.

    do you mind if i offer another side note? i would like to encourage you to read different books (or, as they say these days: google- haha, and find what is reasonable and works for your body type. i find a mix’n’match approach works best for me. for example: it is extremely hard/impossible (for me) to follow a strict raw food diet, nor am i interested– but there are things that i agree with, makes sense, and have tested with my body– that i try to implement in our daily living, such as eating fruit separate from protein, it’s own meal, or at least first before dinner, not during or after. (this is something i have come across in other eating trends, like “eating right for your body/blood type” etc. if you research the digestion times of foods, you will be put off your dessert! haha) i like to call it our fruit appetizer, which we eat while i’m making dinner.) i find it interesting how other countries eat, compared to us, the american “food pyramid” is outdated, and just plain wrong for many people. but what is agreed upon by many different groups– is to have a strong breakfast to give you energy for the day. i wonder about your template of juice for breakfast, and salad for lunch, seems like you’d be famished by dinner ?– giving yourself energy just in time to go to bed. (i admit i do not fully understand the protein content of vegetables, and i could definitely eat more…i am not a big meat eater even though i love it. so maybe i am wrong? i need to do more research myself! )
    but anyways– enjoy your trip! and don’t worry about your vacation eating– a solid diet of espresso, gelato, baguettes, croissants, prosciutto,etc never seems to be habit forming– just necessarily delicious and romantic when traveling. plus, it is very real when they say you walk it off, you will be walking all day every day! if you allow yourself to eat what you crave– you might surprise yourself by craving fruit! (which is actually one of the harder things to find when traveling, oddly enough. when you happen upon the one little corner market– grab stuff! it will probably be the only one you see all day!)
